The ethics of the future – Data Science Pioneers

I recently attended the premiere screening of the documentary movie Data Science Pioneers in Christchurch. This was a great chance to learn and reflect on what I believe will become the ethics of the future. The movie dispels the myth that artificial intelligence and robots will rise against humanity and conquer the world.

If you are interested in the future roles our students may have (or create for themselves), the convergence of humans and technology, machine learning, AI and of course, the ethical dilemmas all this presents, then this movie will be worth watching. There will also be a discussion panel with the team from Digital Future Aotearoa after the movie.

The movie aims to help us tell the difference between data science hype and reality, from the experience of 22 leading data scientists. Learn their views on what’s real (and what they’re excited about). The links for educators to issues such as digital citizenship, as well as futures-related issues such as artificial intelligence and machine learning will be fascinating. Here is the trailer:

Data Science Pioneers will bring the story that will fuel discussions about not only how to construct a solid foundation for AI, but also a supportive community of those responsible for building it. I’ll be interested in whether the five emerging principles of AI (transparency, justice and fairness, non-maleficence, responsibility, and privacy) show through.

The movie gives proof that data scientists aren’t just data-crazy mathematicians that happen to work in a cutting-edge field; they enjoy their work and want to take on difficult ethical questions, too. Find out how they contextualize their role and why they love it while exploring ethical concerns and the challenges to come. They also want to make a difference.
